Captain with Company A, 1st Oregon Volunteer Cavalry, stationed at Fort Walla Walla, W.T., during the Civil War; came West durng the California gold rush in 1849 and then to Oregon in 1851, settling near Salem. During the Indian Wars recruited a company of volunteers in 1856 which eventually became part of First Cavalry Oregon Volunteers.
